My pick!: Top 20 Jpop Songs of 2009 (Rank 1st to 10th)
Wednesday, December 9, 2009
Hopefully you guys have been listening to the recommendations I've been making these few weeks, you won't believe the amount of time that go into these posts.
Continuing from last week, here's my pick for top 10 Jpop songs of 2009.
Number 10: Arashi - Ashita no Kioku
Arashi always did ballads well, and this one is no exception. With a strong melody and typical dramatic music, this one sounds surprisingly heartfelt and simple. It does not try to show off any of Arashi's vocals (not a good idea generally), so it's just easy on the ears. It may not be stellar singing, but hey, it's "real" enough to be good for me.
Number 9: Lead - Gira Gira Romantic
I loved this song from the first time I listened to it! Though I must say the PV was a tad creepy, what with all the young children involved. It's such a pity that Lead aren't more popular than they are, because they're so much more talented than most JE artists. Anyways, the song is mostly upbeat dance-bubblegum-pop with a tad of latin thrown in just for the sake of making it sound non-generic. Very very very infectious nonetheless.
Number 8: Shibutani Subaru, Nishikido Ryo, Ohkura Tadayoshi - Glorious
Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought Kanjani 8 would attempt a ballad (ok well, they might have but I generally avoid them). Much less one that I would actually like.
You might need some time to get used to the Engrish in the song, but go read the lyrics, they're good (taking into account that it IS a Jpop song after all). Sentimental boyband stuff, with a good tune that ends off impressively. Might have ranked higher if other members of Kanjani 8 sang it, Subaru and Ryo do not possess the radio-friendliest of voices.
Number 7: Kobukuro - Niji
As much as you can depend on Arashi to give you a good pop song, you can depend on Kobukuro for the more acoustic-pop stuff. They may be old and not the best lookers, but they still have one of the best voices in the industry. You just can't go wrong with them. And the tons of strings involved should hint you to the grandeur of the song.
Number 6: Kato Shigeaki - Shalala Tambourine
I can imagine people singing this song in Karaokes and being drunk and just murdering the song in mad group yelling. Yes it's one of those kind. But you can be assured that it's fun, I mean, it involves a tambourine! We all know tambourines equals childish embarrassing-in-retrospect fun!
WOOOOOOAH LA LA LA LA! Ahem.
Number 5: Perfume - One Room Disco
When this song first came out early this year, I was insanely ANNOYED by how the intro of the song sounded like some mental experiment to cause you seizures or something. But Perfume, with their robotic goodness eventually delivers with this fun, electronic dance track. Upbeat and strange seems to be what Perfume does best, and this song is testament to that. This song if sang in a normal voice might have belonged to the 80s - cheesy!
Number 4: Monkey Majik - Open Happiness
Fresh and different from the rest of Jpop, Monkey Majik manages to strike a balance between Japanese and English pop. It results in them sounding more mature than the rest of Jpop without being downright depressing (don't you guys feel the more "mature" artists in Jpop love emo songs?). If you've liked any of Monkey Majik's previous stuff, this one is sure to please you as well.
Number 3: Yokoyama Yuu, Yasuda Shota - Kicyu
I really don't know how to explain this song except that it is really really catchy. The chorus - such stuff should be labeled dangerous or something. A bit retro I guess, but wholly enjoyable in the way only Kanjani 8 can do.
Number 2: Ikimonogakari - YELL
Yet another group that never fails to impress me. Ikimonogakari are the professionals in tearjerkers and borderline emo music. I suppose this song was written for graduation or something, but regardless the beautiful tune with emotional singing combines to make for a sure cryfest. I get goosebumps listening to this all the time. You should too, otherwise you're really cold. And you boil puppies. *glares*
Number 1: AKB48 - Namida Surprise!
AKB48 is the new H!P, people should really start to just accept that. How is it that this group of girls churn out hit after hit after hit? A refreshing take on the traditional "Happy Birthday", this song is cute, sparkly and just so cheery that you can't help but be happy listening to this. THIS IS WHAT A YOUNG GIRL GROUP SHOULD SOUND LIKE H!P! Full of youth and fun and all the good stuff. I must admit that I sing this from time to time in a cutesy voice too, just because it is so addictive that way. But you didn't read that. Cough. (You might want to watch the PV for added effect. It's also features
Ito Hideaki, who we all know is HOT, so that's a plus. :D)
All songs in this post can be downloaded using the link below!
(Apparently someone found a need to hack into my private file before I made it public just to download it before this post was published. How impatient are you? LOL.)
Let me know what you think about the songs! I made reasonable effort to listen to a wide variety of songs to find what I really liked, so hopefully you'll like the list too!
(And next week, we start with the Kpop countdown! Excited yet? :D)

My pick!: Top 20 Jpop Songs of 2009 (Rank 11th to 20th)
Wednesday, December 2, 2009
In all honesty, I'm not completely pleased with this list. Firstly it's because I've not been paying as much attention as I'd like to Jpop as I did in previous years (which was really fanatic, in retrospect) and secondly it's because most of the stuff I DID hear ended up being really lame.
Hence I cut the list short, with only 20 songs this time around. But you already had
15 songs in the previous post to try out so that should more or less compensate for the lack of songs.
Number 20: Morning Musume - Nanchatte Renai
Sadly this is the only H!P song that made the list. Everything else this year was just plain boring to me. Probably best described as a power ballad, the vocals are decent and not sickeningly cutesy for once (with the exception of Koharu, epic nasal fail).
Number 19: NEWS - Koi no ABO
DISCO! What's not to love?
Number 18: Arashi - Tobira
How surprising, the main song of this single is not even in the top 20! The typical feel good Johnny's song where all the fans hold hands and wave while the Arashi boys go around the stadium on their silly floats. Good fun.
Number 17: NYC Boys - NYC
This one's for the pedophiles. But we all know we secretly want to bang them underaged boys. Slurp. Anyways, as with all the younger Johnny's groups' songs, it would be safe to assume full-on sugary pop. Steer clear, those who do not like the bubblegum.
Number 16: Hamasaki Ayumi - Rule
I think I've mentioned on my blog before (I can't seem to find the post) that if she had went on do full-on rock and not half-ass it like what she's doing now, I would still be liking her.
This song is a perfect example of how epic Ayumi can be when she wants to be. Full of power and drama and her queenliness, this song will get anyone's adrenaline running. So use this at the gym. Or when murdering someone, if that is your thing. In which case please do not read my blog anymore. I said please, don't kill me.
Number 15: Kanjani 8 - Kyu☆Jo☆Show!!
It's loud, sparkly and crazy. Add in big band and you get Kanjani 8 doing their best thing. THEY'RE CRAZY. Which is what makes this song so unbelievably fun. It's kind of like orchestrated chaos, so be prepared. Did I mention big band yet? Brass! Drums! Loud music!
Number 14: Tegomasu - Tanabata Matsuuri
You can always count on Tegomasu to sing well, and this single is sort of a good display of that. A more traditional tune ensures that this song stands out from the rest of Jpop this year. The brisk cheerful tune has a kind of childish innocent quality to it, and that makes me smile. You will smile too! If you have a bit of kiddy innocence left in you that is.
Number 13: Nakashima Mika - Game
Yes ignore the creepy cover. As much as I bash her and talk a lot of shit about her, this song is really really well done. Old school rock and roll (I'm just guessing genres here) with her eccentric voice combines for a really strange retro song. And we all know she has the weird attitude to carry it off too.
Number 12: Arashi - Everything
Another typical feel-good Arashi pop tune that's not spectacular, but does the trick. The bridge between Ohno and someone I can't remember (Matsujun?) added a nice bit of variety to an otherwise very very generic song. The bridge was my favorite part of the song to be honest, but well, the other parts of the song are pretty decent too.
Number 11: Koda Kumi - ECSTASY
And what would Jpop be without Kuu's sluttiness. This is not one of her best slutty songs, but it does well enough to reign over many many other Jpop songs this year (a sad indication of how weak Jpop is in 2009). Typical sexy dance tune that's just downright dirty and suggestive and is pheromones in aural form. Go listen and touch yourself inappropriately!
As per last week, I've uploaded all the songs on this list to Mediafire for you guys, let me know what you think in the comments!
Just in case you can't get enough, here are some songs (according to rank) that NEARLY made the list but got cut in the last selection. These are songs that I think are acceptable upon listening to it, but couldn't really get into it in the end:
- 31. mihimaru GT - Switch
- 30. V6 - Spirit
- 29. Koda Kumi - Joyful
- 28. Tohoshinki - Survivor
- 27. Koda Kumi - Driving
- 26. ikimonogakari - Hotaru no Hikari
- 25. Koda Kumi - Lick Me
- 24. Do as Infinity - Umareyuku Monotachi e
- 23. Yano Kenta starring Satoshi Ohno - Kumori Nochi Kaisei
- 22. Arashi - Believe
- 21. BoA feat. VERBAL (m-flo) - Bump Bump
Labels: Arashi, Hamasaki Ayumi, Kanjani 8, Koda Kumi, Morning Musume, Nakashima Mika, NEWS, NYC, Tegomasu

Q4R #020: I closed my eyes and approved a few questions and out came this post.
Wednesday, September 2, 2009
This week's Q4R is a little random, because I really don't know what theme to choose this week. D:
So here we go!
- Dear Raid
Why is your blog so sexy?
Sending the man-love from London,
Ciaran.
Ooh London. Please send me a clip of yourself saying "Raid, I'd love to fuck you" in your (hopefully) British accent!
A naked photo would be nice too. Kthxbai. :D
- you're smexy and also what jpop star do you think has the worst teeth ?
Well, I'm not one to judge when it comes to how straight people's teeth are, and in all honesty, some people do look kind of cute with crooked teeth.
So I'm just going to name this person whom I'm quite surprised smiles so widely when she has teeth like that. It's just really un-J-media-like.
She's Mi-mi from BRIGHT, a girl group under avex, and she has probably the messiest teeth I've seen in Jmedia.
A close second would probably be...
Murakami Shingo of Kanjani 8. But I still love him, so you can see that I don't really care about how nice people's teeth are.
- I dont fully understand the system of H!P, care to explain? =]
Tsunku (to himself): When they have boobs and get too hard to keep your hands off of, GRADUATE THEM.
- YOU ARE MY SOUL SOUL ITSUMO SUGU SOBA NI ARU~
Your gheyness does not scare me Ninomiya Kazunari! Stop leaving creepy comments on my blog and go back to fucking some other Arashi member ok? (Preferably Ohno, he's just so desperate for you.)
(And how sad is it that I know the next line of the song?)
(And I just realized that Nino, being born 3 days after my birthday, is such a big bitch too. So if you don't want your kid to be bitchy, you'd probably want to avoid the month of June altogether...)
Refer to above question.
- life is too hard. why is it so hard? why cant we just all eat popcorn until we explode? huh? why are finals such a pain in the ass? why are teachers always fat, and the hot ones are gay. I CANT DO THIS NEMORE!
Personally, the idea of eating popcorn till I explode is not really a very pleasant one, so go ahead without me if you're intending to do that.
Finals are a pain in the ass at first, but once it's over, the feeling is so so amazing. Very much like some other activity many people love.
(Look what school is teaching us on a subliminal level!)
Teachers are always fat or gay so you'd actually study, instead of ogling them. It's an effective system I'd think. Unless you like fat people, or are gay yourself. *shrugs*
- What do you think about Alan?
She has a nice name? My uncle's name is Alan too. He's kind of cool I guess, in the squint-your-eyes-really-hard kind of way.
Other than that, don't really care. Is she from China? I heard she was. And she had some wind-earth-fire singles nonsense. Still don't care.
Ok that's enough randomness for one week. Next week's post will be more... proper I guess. 8D

SQS #051
Sunday, August 9, 2009
This week's SQS feature is...
KANJANI 8.
I got pointed to this set of scans by reader Shavadava (THANKS SO MUCH DEAR) so you know who to thank for all this amazingness.
(But one has to wonder why Kanjani 8 keeps whoring themselves out when really, the only ones worth looking at are Maru and Shingo. Hmm.)

Q4R #013: Johnny's Entertainment (Groups!)
Sunday, June 7, 2009
(Yes, I forgot to publish once again and instead drafted this damned thing. I hate work, work makes me stupid.)
This week is all about JE groups! Too many, so we'll have to see how it goes.
- can you review and compare the music videos of both arashi - believe and ohno's solo ?
please x.x - Comments on Arashi's believe and Ohno's solo. :D
(to think we just got through arashi week too.) - comments on ohnos solo
- how do you like ohno satoshi's vocals ?
Well okay. I loved Believe a TON when it first came out, but eventually it just got SO DAMNED NOISY that I couldn't stand it. The music video was sort of boring, but the set was really pretty though. But the dancing still sucked.
Ohno's singing and solo was boring, but at least the dancing in the PV was good. *shrugs* And he's hot, so I'll forgive him. All I have to do is imagine him tied down on a bedframe and I'm good to go. Who cares about his singing!
- Drunk and naked SMAP member alert! Do you think being in JE scarred them for life and made some of the boys a bit... mentally unstable?
- I know its Kpop week and all, but ya GOTTA express your feelings on Kusanagi Tsuyoshi's arrest. xDDDD
- Have you heard of the SMAP member who got arrested for being buck naked in public?
Since you seem to have a logical reason for everything, what do you think is the story behind this one?

With my awesome in-brain-chip that I've secretly embedded in every single JE male, I was able to dig through my archives to find this:
"W-why do those damned Japanese women like Takuya better than me..... WHY! WHAT IS IT THAT HE HAS THAT I DON'T? He's ... *bzzz* *bzzzzzzz* married. MARRIED YOU HEAR ME. And it's not like his penis is big either. I mean, LOOK AT MINE! .... Oh boy I'm tired, let's sit on this bench. Yeah, look at my thing, it's so big and beautifullllllll. Takuya's little flimsy one..... h-he's... Who's... Who are you? WHAT'S WRONG WITH BEING NAKED. I HAVE A BIG PENIS YOU HEAR ME. Guh... Damned Japanese women don't know what's good even if it hit them on the face..... ooh, a kitten... fucking Takuya...."
And wait till you hear the conversations Nishikido Ryo has with himself in his head. :D
- Arashi's crazy moon! THOUGHTS :D ?
I prefer
Ashita no Kioku a million times more. It is possibly one of the best songs that was released this year. Or maybe it's because I'm busy being an emo kid now. And the PV was well done too. I might gush about it in another post, if I ever find the time to.
- Is it in any way possible that MatsuJun's straight? There are always some people whom everyone thinks is gay who actually aren't, but I can't tell if that could be the case with him since my gaydar is broken.
I highly doubt Matsujun is gay. He just doesn't give me that vibe at all. I think the only possible gay one in Arashi is Ohno, the rest of them just act that way.
And maybe Nino is bisexual because you know, he loves ze buttsecks with Ohno too much.
- MATSUJUN IS HOT HOT HOT! Yummyyy ?
No.
- Raid -
Please list, in order, which Arashi members you would have a relationship (dating/sexual, it doesn't matter) with. :3
1. Ohno - Because I like older guys. And the fact that he finds anything delicious is really adorable. And because's he's a repressed gay dude.
2. Nino - Because he's a bitch.
3. Sho - Because he's clever. I mean,
Tokyo University, hello? That's sexy in my book. FINE FINE KEIO HAPPY NOW? Sheesh, it's not like the guy's my husband or something. All I know is he's smart, and I don't care about the rest. Deal with it.
- Do you like the whole Arashi pairing thing? Sorry for the random question.
I like pairings in ANY group. So yes. And just in case you want to know, my fav pairing is Ohmiya. Because they're like married and happily fucking already. All you girls can just stop hoping now.
- What are your thoughts on Kanjani8's latest subgroup songs and PVs (You Can See, Kicyu, Glorious) from their new album Puzzle?
Sadly, the only song I have no interest in comes from the only member I love.
You Can See was consistently mediocre. The song is really just boring and not my kind of things. Admittedly, it had the best PV of the three (like hello, stupid cut-out art figures dancing? Why the fuck do I care?), but that wasn't enough to make up for the semi-bad song.
Glorious had the best combination of song/PV. The PV was sort of just typical Johnny's stuff but the song was surprisingly good. Considering it was written by someone who actually KNOWS English (I can't remember your name Mr. Songwriter, sorry), the lyrics were pretty much the best you can expect from a JE song.
"Glorious, glorious, miracle - you're the dreams I've got inside. Paint my world, of colors so divine."
Very worth the listen.
Kicyu was my favorite song of the three, but the PV was crap. The song is very typical pop, and the beat is somehow so darned addictive in that very dangerous way (I nearly started clapping my hands in public, the lady sitting beside me on the bus must've thought I was having spasms). Go listen to it. The PV was total crap though. I think HSJ was the one in charge of all the arts and craft in the PV.
- What do you think of having Yamada as the spotlight for HSJ? Who do you think deserves it?
Well, in every group there will definitely be someone who has the spotlight, whether they deserve it or not. I've never found any of these group "spotlights" deserving of their place, and Yamada is included in this whole affair.
But honestly, HSJ as a whole is so plain personality-wise... so... Chinen? Because he's sort of cute. IDEK.
Or Okamoto. Because he already has abs. Add five years and he's gonna be the sexiest shit JE has seen in years.
I'm not going to ask for more questions this week, though I doubt anyone would listen. As you can see from the lateness of posts of late that I've been VERY busy with work and blogging has become a really tough act to keep up with. So yes, you can still ask me questions, but be prepared to wait a HIDEOUSLY long time for your answer.
I'm sorry? I really wish I had more time to be funny for you guys.

Q4R #012: Johnny's Entertainment (General)
Saturday, May 30, 2009
As to be expected, I receive tons of questions on JE. So this week and next week is all about JE!
Just so you guys know, the posts have been prepared already. If you decide to ask a JE question after reading this post, be prepared to wait VERY long for an answer. :D
- Is it true that Johnny raped some people in JE? I know he got charged for it but was it ever proven?
Well, I've really went and researched on the thing, so
here's the article. It was never really proven, but you can't have smoke unless there's a little bit of fire. If you know what I mean.
- As far as Johnny's Entertainment goes, who do you think is the top 3 groups as far as TALENT.
There's not exactly a lot for me to choose from, so...
3rd: Kanjani 8They're a bunch of drunk crazy people who should not be allowed in showbiz. But they are, so yay for me.
2nd: Tackey & TsubasaI like their songs, so they've already got an advantage to begin with. It also doesn't hurt that both of them are gayer than marshmallows and that both of them dance sort of well.
1st: TegomasuThey're really the only decent singers in JE. And they are so obviously lusting for each other, so you know.
- who is the designer of johnny's clothing? such as those kind of clothes that uses feathers they use in concerts
Colonel Sanders.
Depends on for what - day listening or night watching? If you know what I mean. :D
- if you could meet Johnny of JE in person, what is the first thing in your mind that you want to tell him?
Actually, it would be a question. And the question would be... How does young illegal ass feel?
Yes, that's Johnny for those who've not seen before. Can you imagine him molesting young boys? *barfs*
- What would happen if you lock Johnny and Tsunku in a room together?
They'd give birth to Mika Nakashima.
- Hmm... what's the conspiracy behind keeping Ikuta Toma a JE Junior?
He refuses to suck.
Anyways, I've been really SUPER busy these few weeks because of work and all. I have NO time at all to go online and all (can you believe I've only JUST downloaded the latest Kenken album and I forgot all about it?) and so all these blogging is really hard to do. And it's not like I can just fuck work and give no regard to it since it concerns my grade and all.
So please please please be patient with me while I try to keep up with blogging, having a life and working at the same time. It's not the easiest thing to do, but I'm not about to give up any of the three now. D:
But yes, more questions to be answered next week! Hopefully on time.

Q4R #001
Wednesday, February 25, 2009
Yay! First ever Q4R segment!
There has been way too many questions streaming in, I really didn't expect that many. xD (It's currently 50ish and counting.) So I'm going to have split them up somehow.
And I have decided to answer 5 (or a few more) questions per week, unless there's like a serious buildup of questions to answer.
This week's questions! :D
- [What do you ACTUALLY think of Nissy?]
I know the impression I give on this blog is that I hate Nissy's guts to bits and pieces.
Well, that's basically the whole truth.
I think he's an attention-seeking manwhore who is a total bisexual, but only because he wants to glomp more people and gain more attention.
- [If I asked you to have sex with me, would your answer be the same as your answer to this question?]
No. Yes. Bah shuddap. You confuse me. D:
- [I would be glad if you wrote your impressions on the new AAA album! ^^ and also on the Jamboree!! PV ^^ thanks!! love your blog!]
Aww thanks for loving my blog. xD
Let me talk about the Jamboree!! PV first then. I think it is cheap, and the dance could have been way more complex and neat for a group such as AAA. I don't particularly like it. A brighter and cheerier set should have been used. And that's all I think about it. It's disappointing really.
The AAA album. Hmm. Well I think the fact that I've not received the album yet (it's been released for more than a week already! I'm only getting it end of March along with some other Yesasia stuff) shows how much I care for this album.
I'll just briefly review the 6 new songs in the album then.
SAVE YOUR SOUL: Ah yes. This is the song that is targeted at H!P lovers. It sounds like something Morning Musume would sing. It is nothing too amazing, and it sound a bit bare for my liking. I don't like how Misako and Chiaki is the main for this song while the others just act as backup vocals. It's just not a strong setup. The song is relatively catchy, but very very forgettable. I like Hidaka's rap though. I guess it shows a lot when my fave part is the freaking RAP.
Jamboree!!: I'm glad they chose a lower range this time for their upbeat song. This way, their lives won't be overflowing with SCREEEECHING (like Music!!!). I like this song, but I got tired of it pretty quickly. It's pretty generic stuff that you would probably not hate, but won't classify as an "AWESOME SONG ZOMGAH" either. Maybe it's because the song is set in a lower range, but it sounds a bit draggy. It could have been more upbeat and chirpy, more fast-paced. But yeah, this is probably one of the better songs in this album.
Wonderful Girls: This happens to be my favorite song on the album. And it's just a coincidence that it is the all-boys song. D: One of the first impressions I got from this song is that it is very SMAP-esque. SMAP could have been singing this 5 or 6 years ago when they were younger. Relatively safe pop stuff. The kind that the audience claps along to somewhere in the middle of the concert.
I like the Shuta/Shin parts in the song, partly because I'm quite sick of Urata/Nissy's voice already. Maybe that's why I like this song better than the rest. I don't see how a decent dance can come from a song like this, but we shall just wait and see.
Deai no Chikara III: Another one? Seriously? If DNC1 was the part where they begin fall in love, and DNC2 was the part where they are deeply in love then DNC3 is where they begin to break up. It's beautiful and sad yes, but Misako's singing is just off in parts. She sounds like she has a stuffed nose.
The buildup of music over the song was pretty well done to me, but the song is once again pretty forgettable after a while. I also don't like the lack or harmonization in this song. The you sing one verse I sing one verse format makes this rather boring to listen to. Even when they sing together, they sing in the same pitch, which is just blah.
Let's hope this is the last one. I don't like DNCs to begin with.
HORIZON: This is the song on the album that I found most memorable. It's not the catchiest of songs, but there's this strange quality to it that makes it really fun to listen to. The part before the chorus is my favorite part and it is exceptionally bouncy. It sound really odd on the first few listens, but it grows on you. The overall feel of the song is light and bright, and if given a choice, I would choose this song to have a PV.
Hidaka's rap at the end sounds a bit like Soulja - airy, husky and relaxed - which is also a refreshing change from the usual act-macho stuff he's been doing.
Hajimari no Kiseki: Oh god. Another JE inspired song. This is the kind of song a JE group would have to "fill up space" in an album. The overly happy, "everyone sing together and yay we are good friends!" kind of song. Very very generic and very very boring, even on first listen.
- [Who is the person in the banner for it?]
Murakami Shingo and Maruyama Ryuhei of Kanjani 8. I just thought the pencils and glasses fit the whole questions thing.
- [are you really going to switch from Jpop to Kpop D':]
I don't think so, no. It's not so much a switch as it is a... new interest? I don't know. I don't think I can ever truly give up Jpop, it is after all my first love and all. *mushy*
But Jpop has been infuriating recently, with almost everything that's coming out being so generic and same-ish. Kpop has more varied styles and the videos are more often than not, pretty damn amazing.
But I'll admit, Kpop has distracted me plenty from Jpop recently. *shrugs*
More questions to be answered next week! :D
